The City of Detroit will commemorate new Americans during the annual Naturalization Ceremony, which will be hosted by the Immigration Task Force in collaboration with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. This event will take place at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center on Friday, May 24th, from 10:00am-12:00pm.
“The naturalization ceremony is always an emotional experience – we celebrate all of the people becoming new U.S. citizens today, while recognizing the contributions of so many immigrants who have come before and contributed to the richness and beauty of our city. Detroit prides itself on being a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming city,” said Council Member Castañeda-López.
“It is so important for our local governments to embrace and recognize newcomers to our communities. Witnessing a naturalization ceremony is an incredibly moving experience, and we encourage U.S.-born residents to celebrate this milestone with their immigrant neighbors,” said Welcoming Michigan Director Christine Sauvé.
“This is such an exciting ceremony for many immigrants. This is a momentous occasion for those who have journeyed from around the world to become US Citizens, and oftentimes endured unspeakable hardships, and it is an opportunity to reflect on the incredible privilege we have as Americans. This ceremony is where the American dream is realized,” said Kaity Nicastri, Immigration Paralegal at The International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit.
“I think everyone should attend a naturalization ceremony. It is such a privilege to see how naturalization works, to understand the application process, the documentation process, and the test that they have to take before they are approved for citizenship. When you see this beautiful ceremony, you know how hard they have worked to get to this point. Most of the families have overcome enormous challenges and the ceremony reminds us how lucky we
are and how we take citizenship for granted. I look forward to it every year and try to bring a friend or family member as a guest because I know that they will be changed by the naturalization ceremony,” said Raquel Garcia, Director of Housing and Special Projects at Global Detroit.
