LANSING, Mich. — Today, the Michigan Asian Pacific American Legislative Caucus released the following statement on the historic election of President-elect Joseph Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Devi Harris. The daughter of Shyamala Gopalan Harris, an Indian immigrant, Harris will be the first Black, female, Indian American and Asian American elected to the office of vice president:

“The historic nature of this election will not be forgotten, as Asian American and Pacific Islander voters turned out in record numbers to make their voices heard. The vast majority voted in support of Kamala Harris. Representation matters. Little girls of color everywhere, including South Asian and Asian American girls, will have an incredible role model in the Office of Vice President who looks like them. How fitting, as Diwali begins, that we can also celebrate this transformative moment for our country that is reflective of America’s growing diversity.

“Along with Harris’ victory, two other Indian American Democrats were elected to the Michigan House of Representatives last week, Ranjeev Puri and Shri Thanedar. We look forward to welcoming them to our caucus, along with their support on Asian American and Pacific Islander issues in the future.”
